Covid Collecting: Be A Part of History and Make a Scrapbook to Show Future Generations

Over the last few weeks we've been putting together local history learning activities for children who are currently working from home.  These have been published in The Star alongside other learning ideas.  One idea for a fun summer holiday project is to compile a scrapbook of your Coronavirus experiences.

Our Victorian ancestors often kept diaries and scrapbooks.  They were created for a variety of reasons: as a craft project, as a way to preserve letters or photos, and as a way to document a family history or special event.

These pictures are taken from a scrapbook put together by a Sheffield teenager in the 1890s.  The scrapbook includes little pieces of everyday life such as photographs, sketches, paintings, diary entries and pressed flowers.

Activity: Have a go at creating your own scrapbook documenting your life since the Coronavirus pandemic sent you home from school.  How has life changed during this period?  What would you like to record to show future generations?

Ideas: You could include: artwork, photographs, written memories, messages from friends and family, cards, leaflets, stickers and newspaper cuttings.

If you'd like to show us your finished projects (or even deposit a copy at Sheffield City Archives) tweet us @SheffArchives or email us archives@sheffield.gov.uk  We'd love to see where your creativity takes you!

Your scrapbook might become a historical document in 100 years’ time!
