  • Book browsing (at selected libraries - se below)
  • Order and Collect from all Libraries
  • Public access computers - by appointment only
  • Home Library Service
  • Online eLibrary available 24/7 for library members
  • A programme of online events
  • Searches in the Archives - by appointment only

Entering the library to browse and borrow books

From week beginning 10th May, we’ll be opening the following libraries for you to enter, browse, and select your own books.  Computer use must be booked in advance.
Opening hours may be viewed below.
  • Central Lending Library (lending section only)
  • Crystal Peaks
  • Ecclesall
  • Hillsborough
From week beginning 17th May, there will be staggered opening of the following libraries for you to enter.  View opening hours below.
  • Chapeltown
  • Darnall
  • Firth Park
  • Highfield
  • Manor
  • Parson Cross
  • Stocksbridge
  • Woodseats
Across all libraries, the soft seating will have been removed, or cordoned off, and        newspapers are still not available. Toilet facilities will not be available. It will not be possible to book rooms at this time.

We don’t yet have a confirmed date for opening the other departments in the Central Library . Local Studies and the Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC) will start with pre booked appointments.

We have a selection of children’s books in the Lending Library, and plan to open the Children's Library on a Saturday initially.

In line with guidance, anyone can visit the library, but we’ll be controlling the number of people entering the building at any one time. Staff will advise you of procedures when you enter, and you will be asked to scan the QR track and trace code, or provide          your contact details. These will be kept in a secure place and destroyed safely after 21 days.

You will notice some changes such as plastic screens.  We'll require you to wear a face mask, sanitise hands and follow social distancing guidelines.  You will be asked to use the self- service machines if possible and wipes will be available for you to clean the screen between use.  The payment option will not be in use.

Staff will be available for enquiries and advice, joining the library, and helping you to find books and information. They will sit behind screens at the help desk, and we ask you to observe the social distancing markers.

There could also be some queuing outside.

How many books can I take out?

15 books. This will also apply to the Order and Collect service. We will also return to three online or phone renewals before we need to see the books. We will also be extending the date for no new fines to be applied.

What is the Order and Collect Service?

The Order and Collect Service is for customers wishing to receive a pack of  up to 15 books selected for them by library staff at all libraries across the city plus Central Library, based on their preferences for genre submitted by online form , email or phone.  Contact details for the libraries can be found on the City Council webpage.

It is a minimum contact service. Customers will place their order and then collect a bag of 5 items (Books, non-fiction DVDs, audio books, graphic novels etc) for either adults or children from the foyer or an external door of the library. Customers may have up to two DVDs and two music CDs in addition to their 15 books. They will also be able to return books they have had on loan

All library fines have been suspended until the 31st May.

Opening Times

The current opening hours are detailed below.  We are planning to increase the opening hours at some libraries from June onwards, but this will be dependent on maintaining Covid 19 safe environments for staff and customers.

Central, Crystal Peaks, Ecclesall, and Hillsborough Libraries are now open for browsing.

From the wb17th May, the remaining libraries will reopen for browsing, as detailed below.

To allow as many customers as possible to have access to browsing, your visit will be restricted to 15-20 minutes. If there is no queue or customers waiting, you may be able to spend longer.

Volunteer managed libraries

Some Volunteer Libraries are also now open for browsing and some are offering an Order and Collect service. For further details visit Volunteer Libraries in Sheffield

Events and activities

All our events and activities will continue to operate online, until we receive updated Covid guidance, which permits us to offer these safely in the library.

For the latest updates on upcoming activities check out our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter, and our Eventbrite page.

You can also view recent recordings of events on our YouTube channel.

eLibrary open 24/7

We continue to provide online library services via our eLibrary and a simple registration process to become a member click here.  The eLibrary contains a large range of eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks, and eComics.  These services are available free of charge to library members.

Home Library Service

We are now providing home library service deliveries in our new electric van. The service delivers to any Sheffield resident who is unable to get to their local library and has no-one to help them do so, or who may be able to get to the library but cannot carry the books they’ve chosen.
We can also offer the service on a temporary basis, for example whilst someone is recovering from an operation. For more information about this service customers can call 0114 273 4277 or email Mobileservices.Library@sheffield.gov.uk

City Archives

To book your appointment at the City Archives, contact them on 0114 2039395 or email archives@sheffield.gov.uk.
